As a BzzAgent, I was granted $60 in credits to make a one time purchase from eSalon shop. I was able to let their staff know just what color I was aiming towards, upload a few pictures so they could get an idea of my hair style, skin tone and current shade, and even select a few items to help with the upkeep of my new color. Here is a picture of my hair before I got around to coloring it this time (sorry for the blur, it keeps my grays hidden. lol)
First off, I will say that unless you live in a house that is well ventilated with windows and a larger bathroom, you might want make sure you take precautions before attempting the dye job, like opening windows in nearby rooms and putting an oscillating fan outside the door. The fumes on this product killed my eyes, and because of it, I was only able to use the equivalent of about 1/3 of the bottle for my roots, as well as for the second bottle of dye and developer for the finishing gloss. The rest I threw away (except for a bit of the gloss that I added water too and used to finish the process, as stated in the instructions).
I personally chose to use the instructions included, since I chose to purchase all the hair coloring tools that were offered on the website. This was a huge mistake for me, since I'm not really acquainted with doing things in a 'traditional' sense. I have never been trained in hair cut or coloring, and since I was dying my hair on my own...it was very difficult. It made it double hard to use even half the amount of dye since I had to pull down sections and then clip them back up to do the next while dye fumes attacked my eyes and made me feel faint. Next time, I definitely will be dying my hair the same way I've done it for years...straight from box to hair...no clips or sections needed. If the scent were easier to handle, this product would definitely rank 5 stars in my book.
The instructions included were helpful, and while I doubt I will use this same exact method to dye my hair in the future, it at least insured that all of the gray hair along my hairlines were covered. I also liked the fact that my colorist (yes, you get your own colorist included when you purchase from eSalon) even sent me a personal email and informed me of a slight change from the color I selected for my order...she said she was changing it just a bit to a shade that would better suit my skin tone. You definitely can't get that in a boxed hair color kit.
After washing it with color safe shampoo, using a color enhancer in a red shade, using color safe conditioner, then finishing up with a color safe conditioner I purchased from eSalon and rinsing, my hair feel wonderful. My hair actually looks better than it did previously, and as an extra confidence booster, it wiped out the gray hair clustered around the part in my hair.
For about $25, you can select the shade that best fits your personality, get your colorist's input on how well that shade actually fits you, and be sent a package that includes start up materials (single use color safe shampoo and conditioner packets, stain guard, two sets of coloring gloves), developer and dye in the colors you specified on your order form. Ordering products is easy, shipping is super fast (I received mine in a few days time), and as long as you find a way to get around the harsh chemical scent attached to the dye/developer combination, it is definitely worth looking into.
